In Atlanta, We Love To Tear Historic Shit Down
A rare International style Modern era apartment complex built in 1938, Peachtree Hills was built on the city's then suburban edge in Buckhead near Garden Hills and on Atlanta Preservation Center's list of most endangered structures for 2005.

Of course the writer for the AJC didn't mention any of that when he championed a new development for Buckhead that would house the area's growing elderly population.
Buckhead complex will be designed for elderly
But what is ironic will be that this development will move poor to middle class elderly residents out in place of wealthy elderly residents - prices will start at $450k. The development is being built by Isakson-Barnhart that appears to be making luxory elderly housing their bread & butter, of course providing a needed service that will benefit many (at a price). What can we expect in the place of the early Modernist designs of Peachtree Hills? Judging by another development, it may look like this:

But another question would be this - since this development will include assisted care & will be all inclusive. Why build it in Buckhead? Oh, never mind, I'm sure these old folks who can afford $450k condos will be taking MARTA all over the place & eating and walking to the restaraunts down the streets. Because the elderly that needs assisted care love the city life.

Isakson Barnhart
The Good Guy:

Who and where do we picket or petition? That pisses me off. There's already a significant shortage of early 20th century Modernist architecture left in this world. Leave it to Atlanta to take an active role in ridding the world of just another form of "artistic debris".

it's really quite a shame. i really try to love this city... (and deep down i always will, no matter where i end up) but the vision here is so shortsighted it's pathetic. i've never even seen that apartment before, but i'm glad to know about it now.

It's probably the only place in Buckhead my wife & I seriously considered living. It's down the street from Lindbergh MARTA station & in the more characterful side of Butthead. But additionally the complex is just cool to look at...

i agree with you 100% ,being a native atlantian and living in peachtree hills 35 yrs. it has changed from ptree. hills to picketvill now to zig zag hills whats next. and the community center, a total catastrophy the building is enough to visualy make a mad dog run in a different direction. i guess good taste is a thing of the past.

I guess I need to make a comment here - I don't live there but in Grant Park. But I have always loved these apartment buildings.
What can I say? It's Atlanta - developers are now wanting to tear down a row of 100+ old mansions on Piedmont.

so you thought it was bad three weeks ago. look what you have now a death trap.and a ugly one at that.why cant someone post signs to stop this nonsence now.before a serious accident occurs.the persons that had anything to do with this outrageous, and no plan evidently did not know or care that p'tree hills is used by families, fire protection, ambulances, adac, and many other bussiness not to mention school buses.bumpers and lights in correct places would certainly work,as they do normandy drive and many other streets.
