I'm back.

I just returned from our mighty trip to Louisville, Kentucky. We drove straight there and straight back and DAAAAAAAMN I am tired. We did go tour Mammoth Cave, at least the Frozen Niagara portion. Now I can't friggin' walk from the sore muscles in my legs.

Also, me--big time subscriber to "Acrophobia". I am terrified of heights. Big bad phobe. And the "New Entrance" to Mammoth Cave is straight down 200 ft of moist stainless steel stairs that are over a super long drop. And of course it is a tight squeeze (good thing I am not claustrophobic too.) To top it off, the people in front of me went sloooooooooow and keep peering over the side, further freaking me out as I was stuck in the middle of a stairway. It sucketh.

However, we got to the bottom and it was completely worth it. So beautiful. I love Mother Nature's work, when she isn't busy screwing around with my reproductive tract.

Ok, time to go soak in epsom salt and then watch me some Lost Hobbitses.

Why Louisville? Isn't that a really long way away from where you live?

I've been to Mammoth Cave. Deep, dark, full of radon, scared the bejezus out of me. Realized half-way thru the tour that I have a fear of being trapped.

It figures.

It is 7 FREAKING hours away from where we live (Atlanta). We went for various reasons, going to see Slint in concert being one.

Yeah, I don't think I could be a pro speleunker. Even though it's gorgeous, I panic easily.

Outrageously scared of heights, just reading about the stairs made my heart palpate. And I am somewhat claustrophobic.
Last summer we went to Vancouver and visited the Capilano Bridge, the longest suspension bridge. I made it across and back but let's just say they don't want me to come back.
So, I will have to cross Mammoth Cave off my list.

I LOVE Mammoth Caves! We used to go every year when I was growing up. (Visiting relatives in Bowling Green, KY) When I turned 16 (minimum required age) my mother and I went on the tour that lasts ALL DAY and requires knee pads and a hard had with a light on it. I am not bothered by heights or small spaces and this included lots of both.
I assume from your description that the "New Entrance" is the old exit? The tours I remember usually ended going up the giant spiral staircase.
Did they turn the lights out on you to let you see just how very dark it is down there? That always freaked me out, literally cannot see your hand in front of your face.

*shiver* caves freak me out. I'll take the stairs anytime over having large amounts of earth over my head that COULD COLLAPSE AT ANY TIME AND CRUSH ME.

Eek.

I love spelunking and the last time I was in Kentucky I went through this really awesome cave- we could only stay two hours because to get in you must belly flop into ice cold water and shimmy under a rock ledge. Hypothermia is not too far behind even if you keep moving. Sounds fun, eh?

Have also done the commercial tour of Mammoth Cave- awesome!
